Recreation Coordinator - Star After-School Program

(At-Will/Hourly/Part-Time/Grant-Funded Position)

DEFINITION: Success Through Academics and Recreation (STAR) is a grant-funded after-school program operated in partnership with the Paramount Unified School District. STAR is designed to enhance children’s overall academic performance, reduce absenteeism, improve behavior, and re-engage the child in the educational process by providing homework assistance, mentoring, physical fitness, and recreational activities in a safe, supervised environment. Site Coordinators are responsible for providing the onsite leadership to ensure STAR program effectiveness and success.

WAGE & HOURS: $14.90 - $18.11 per hour, appointment is generally made at the beginning step; approximately 25 hours per week, although not guaranteed. The STAR after-school program operates Monday – Friday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.  Attendance at monthly Saturday trainings is required. This position works only during the school year.

QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience: Completion of 48 units of college course work in Recreation or related field (must provide a copy of college transcripts to verify units). Previous relevant experience in Recreation or related field preferred. Knowledge and Ability: The successful candidate will have the ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and implement special events; supervise, assist, and safeguard children participating in STAR programs; communicate clearly and concisely; supervise and evaluate employees; will have a working knowledge of municipal recreation programs; implementation and assessment of recreation, sports and program methods and practices.

Driver’s License Required: Valid Class C California Driver License and acceptable driving record.

GENERAL DUTIES:    Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator will coordinate the operation of an after-school program; supervise instructional staff; facilitate the delivery of the LitART Literacy Curriculum including the literacy, math, enrichment, recreational, and homework support activities; maintain clean and organized classroom areas; actively participate in professional developments activities including training workshops and coaching; supervise recreation activities, sports programs, special events, and excursions; employ positive classroom management and discipline techniques; consistently support the mission of the STAR program; communicate regularly with school principal, teachers, parents, and community; manage program logistics such as the collection of student data and attendance records; assist the Program Director with program development and evaluation activities; and perform other duties as assigned.
